Estelle de Jongh - The Men in the Sky

Estelle de Jongh is a social documentary photographer and photojournalist focusing on human stories and lives. Currently based in Cornwall, she has created many projects photographing individuals. From artists, blacksmiths and knitters to fishermen and manual workers, she immerses herself into her shoots, engaging deeply with her subjects to gain a personal and authentic understanding, allowing her to capture unique photographs to give viewers more of an insider's perspective.

Her book; The Men in The Sky is a photographic story of men at work. Inspired by an ongoing theme of labour and documenting lifestyles different from the norm in past projects, she joined a crew of crane erectors on their jobs constructing multiple cranes across London. In the series, we see the quiet simplicity of moments on-site, contrasted with movement and motion within their work, often overshadowed by the towering structures they help create.

“I wanted to give people an insight to this crew and their dangerous but fascinating job we wouldn’t usually have the ability nor permission to see at eyelevel. Not to mention, give recognition towards a group of men who are behind the creation of our ever-evolving urban landscape”.
